How HSK Is Scored -- The Official Formula
HSK uses a simple sum-of-sections formula:
- HSK 1-2: Listening (0-100) + Reading (0-100) = Total (0-200)
- HSK 3-6: Listening (0-100) + Reading (0-100) + Writing (0-100) = Total (0-300)
Each section is scored proportionally to questions correct. There is no negative marking -- guess every question. There are no section minimums -- a 100/100/0 split passes HSK 4 just as well as 67/67/66.
HSK Pass Marks by Level
| Level | Max Score | Pass Mark | % | CEFR | Global Pass Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | 200 | 120 | 60% | A1 | ~78% |
| HSK 2 | 200 | 120 | 60% | A2 | ~72% |
| HSK 3 | 300 | 180 | 60% | B1 | ~68% |
| HSK 4 | 300 | 180 | 60% | B2 | ~62% |
| HSK 5 | 300 | 180 | 60% | C1 | ~55% |
| HSK 6 | 300 | 180 | 60% | C2 | ~48% |
The 60% threshold is universal -- no level has a higher or lower pass mark.
Section-by-Section Score Breakdown
| Level | Listening Qs | Reading Qs | Writing Qs | Listening Time | Total Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HSK 1 | 20 | 20 | -- | 15 min | ~40 min |
| HSK 2 | 35 | 25 | -- | 25 min | ~55 min |
| HSK 3 | 40 | 30 | 10 | 35 min | ~90 min |
| HSK 4 | 45 | 40 | 15 | 30 min | ~105 min |
| HSK 5 | 45 | 45 | 10 | 30 min | ~125 min |
| HSK 6 | 50 | 50 | 1 essay | 35 min | ~140 min |
Each section is graded out of 100 regardless of the number of questions -- so each correct answer in a 20-question section is worth more than each correct answer in a 50-question section.
What Counts as a Good HSK Score?

How to Improve Your HSK Score
If your calculator result is below pass mark or below your goal, prioritize improvements in this order:
- Lowest-scoring section first -- gains compound faster from a weak baseline
- Vocabulary if reading is weak -- 80% of reading questions hinge on knowing the key word
- Listening practice if listening is weak -- 30 minutes daily of native-pace audio for 8 weeks shifts scores by 15-20 points
- Timed mock tests -- many candidates score well untimed but lose 15+ points on the real timed exam
- Writing templates (HSK 5-6) -- memorized essay structures save 5-10 points and 10 minutes

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the HSK passing score?
The HSK passing score is 60% of the maximum: 120 out of 200 for HSK 1-2, and 180 out of 300 for HSK 3-6. This 60% threshold is universal across all standard HSK levels. There are no section minimums -- only the combined total matters.
How is the HSK scored?
HSK 1-2 is scored across 2 sections (Listening, Reading) of 100 points each = 200 total. HSK 3-6 is scored across 3 sections (Listening, Reading, Writing) of 100 points each = 300 total. Each section is graded proportionally to correct answers. There is no negative marking, so guessing is encouraged.
Are there minimum section scores in HSK?
No. The HSK does not enforce minimum section scores -- only your combined total matters. A candidate scoring 100/100/0 on HSK 4 (200 total) passes just as a candidate scoring 67/67/66 (200 total) does. However, extreme imbalance signals weakness that may matter for university admissions.
What is a good HSK 4 score for university?
For most Chinese universities, an HSK 4 score of 180+ (the pass mark) is sufficient for undergraduate admission. Top-10 universities (Tsinghua, Peking, Fudan, Zhejiang) typically require 210+ on HSK 4 or, more commonly, an HSK 5 certificate. Scholarship applications usually require 200+ on HSK 4.
How long is an HSK score valid?
HSK score certificates are valid for 2 years from the test date. Universities, employers, and scholarship committees will not accept HSK results older than 24 months. If your certificate expires, you must retake the exam to obtain a current credential.
How is HSK 7-9 scored differently?
HSK 7-9 uses a different scoring system: 5 sections (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking, Translation) of 100 points each = 500 total. Your final certificate level (7, 8, or 9) is determined by your score band -- 180-269 for HSK 7, 270-359 for HSK 8, 360-500 for HSK 9. See our HSK 7-9 preparation guide for details.
Can I see my HSK score online?
Yes. HSK results are released on chinesetest.cn approximately 10 days after computer-based (iBT) tests and 30 days after paper-based tests. Log in to your registration account and click "Score Report" to view your section breakdown and total. The hard-copy certificate is mailed within 60 days.
What CEFR level does HSK match?
HSK levels align approximately with CEFR as follows: HSK 1 = A1 (Beginner), HSK 2 = A2 (Elementary), HSK 3 = B1 (Intermediate), HSK 4 = B2 (Upper Intermediate), HSK 5 = C1 (Advanced), HSK 6 = C2 (Mastery). HSK 7-9 extends beyond CEFR C2 into specialized professional proficiency.
