What Is the HSK Exam?

HSK stands for Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì (汉语水平考试) — the standardized Chinese proficiency test administered by the Chinese Ministry of Education. It's the most widely recognized Chinese language exam in the world.

HSK is used for:

  • University admissions — most Chinese universities require HSK 4 or higher
  • Scholarship applications — Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) requires HSK 4 minimum
  • Employment — companies hiring for China-related positions list HSK on job descriptions
  • Immigration — some countries accept HSK as proof of Chinese proficiency
  • Personal achievement — a measurable milestone in your Chinese learning journey

The current format has six levels (HSK 1–6), from absolute beginner to near-native. A newer "HSK 3.0" standard was introduced in 2025, but the classic HSK 1–6 remains the most widely used format worldwide.

BizHan uses the classic HSK 1–6 format with 178 practice tests — you can practice any level for free.

HSK Levels Overview — Which Level Should You Take?

Level Words Questions Duration Sections CEFR BizHan Tests
HSK 1 150 40 40 min 听力 + 阅读 A1 26 tests
HSK 2 300 60 55 min 听力 + 阅读 A2 30 tests
HSK 3 600 80 90 min 听力 + 阅读 + 书写 B1 30 tests
HSK 4 1,200 100 105 min 听力 + 阅读 + 书写 B2 31 tests
HSK 5 2,500 100 125 min 听力 + 阅读 + 书写 C1 30 tests
HSK 6 5,000+ 101 140 min 听力 + 阅读 + 书写 C2 31 tests

Key insight: HSK 1–2 only test listening + reading. From HSK 3 onwards, a writing section (书写) is added — this is where most students struggle.

How to Choose Your Level

  • Complete beginner (0–3 months of study) → HSK 1
  • Elementary (6 months) → HSK 2
  • Intermediate (1 year) → HSK 3
  • Upper-intermediate (2 years / university-level) → HSK 4
  • Advanced (working in China) → HSK 5
  • Near-native (academic / professional Chinese) → HSK 6

Not sure? Take a practice test one level above where you think you are. If you score above 60%, you're ready for that level.

How to Prepare for HSK — Step-by-Step Strategy

No matter which level you're targeting, HSK preparation follows the same five-step framework:

Step 1 — Know the Exam Format

Before studying a single word, understand exactly what the exam looks like:

  • How many sections and questions per section
  • What question types to expect (matching, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, sentence ordering)
  • Time limits per section
  • Scoring: 200 points total for HSK 1–2, 300 points for HSK 3–6. Pass = 60%

Take one practice test on BizHan before you start studying — it shows you exactly what you're preparing for.

Step 2 — Build Your Vocabulary Systematically

Vocabulary is the foundation of every HSK level. But don't just memorize word lists — learn each word with:

  • Pinyin — correct pronunciation with tones
  • Meaning — in context, not just dictionary translation
  • Example sentence — how the word is actually used
  • Audio — hear native pronunciation

Use BizHan's Vocabulary Notebooks — organized by HSK level with pinyin and audio. Pair it with the BizHan Dictionary for example sentences and translations.

Daily targets:

  • HSK 1–2: 5–10 new words per day
  • HSK 3–4: 10–15 new words per day
  • HSK 5–6: 15–20 new words per day

Step 3 — Practice Listening Every Day

Listening is the hardest section for most HSK test-takers. The audio plays once (at most twice for HSK 1–2), and you can't rewind.

  • Start with BizHan practice tests — each has real-format listening questions with native audio
  • Do at least 15 minutes of focused listening daily
  • Supplement with Chinese podcasts, short videos, or dramas with Chinese subtitles
  • After each test, re-listen to every question you got wrong

Step 4 — Take Practice Tests Under Exam Conditions

This is where most students skip — and why they fail.

  • Timer on, no dictionary, quiet room
  • Complete the entire test in one sitting (40–140 minutes depending on level)
  • BizHan offers 26–31 full tests per level — more than enough for thorough preparation
  • Review every wrong answer: understand why the correct answer is correct
  • Track your score over time — you should see steady improvement

Step 5 — Focus on Your Weak Sections

After 3–5 practice tests, you'll know your weak spots. Allocate study time accordingly:

  • Listening weak? → 40% of study time on listening drills
  • Reading slow? → Practice timed reading, learn to scan for keywords
  • Writing struggles? (HSK 3+) → Daily sentence writing + grammar pattern practice

HSK Preparation Timeline — How Long Does It Take?

Level Starting From Study Hours Needed Recommended Prep Time Daily Study
HSK 1 Zero 80–100 hrs 2–3 months 1 hr/day
HSK 2 HSK 1 80–100 hrs 2–3 months 1 hr/day
HSK 3 HSK 2 120–150 hrs 3–4 months 1–1.5 hrs/day
HSK 4 HSK 3 200–280 hrs 4–6 months 1.5–2 hrs/day
HSK 5 HSK 4 200–300 hrs 6–9 months 1.5–2 hrs/day
HSK 6 HSK 5 300–400 hrs 9–12 months 2 hrs/day

From zero to HSK 4 (university admission level): approximately 480–630 total study hours, or about 12–18 months of consistent daily study.

Pro tip: Consistent daily study (30–60 minutes) is far more effective than weekend cramming. Use BizHan's practice tests weekly to track whether you're on pace.

Common HSK Preparation Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Only studying vocabulary. Vocabulary without listening practice leads to a failing listening score. Balance your study: 40% listening, 30% vocabulary, 20% reading, 10% writing (HSK 3+).
  2. Ignoring the writing section. From HSK 3 onwards, writing is worth 100 points — the same as listening or reading. Students who skip writing practice lose easy points.
  3. Never taking a full practice test. The HSK is a timed exam. You need stamina to focus for 40–140 minutes straight. Take at least 10 full practice tests before exam day.
  4. Not reviewing wrong answers. Getting a question wrong is useless unless you understand why. After every practice test, spend 15 minutes reviewing each mistake.
  5. Starting too high. Ego pushes people to attempt HSK 4 when they're not ready. It's better to pass HSK 3 with 240 than fail HSK 4 with 150. Take a practice test first to gauge your true level.
  6. Not using a dictionary actively. When you encounter a new word in a practice test, look it up immediately in the BizHan Dictionary — see pinyin, audio, and example sentences.
  7. Cramming the night before. HSK rewards months of consistent study, not last-minute memorization. Start early, study daily, test weekly.

Frequently Asked Questions About HSK

How much does the HSK exam cost?

Prices vary by country and test center. Typical costs: HSK 1: $20–30, HSK 2: $30–40, HSK 3: $40–50, HSK 4: $50–60, HSK 5: $60–70, HSK 6: $70–80. Check your local Confucius Institute or chinesetest.cn for exact pricing.

Can I prepare for HSK in 1 month?

For HSK 1, yes — if you study 2–3 hours daily and take practice tests. For HSK 2, it's possible but tight. For HSK 3 and above, one month is not enough. We recommend at least 3 months of consistent daily study for HSK 3+.

Is HSK accepted for university admission in China?

Yes. Most Chinese universities require HSK 4 with a score of 180 or above for undergraduate programs taught in Chinese. Graduate programs typically require HSK 5. Some universities accept HSK 3 for language preparatory programs.

What's the pass score for HSK?

60% of the total score. For HSK 1–2: 120 out of 200. For HSK 3–6: 180 out of 300. There is no minimum per section — only the total score matters.

Can I take HSK online?

Yes. The HSK Home Edition (online proctored) has been available since 2020 in many countries. You take the test at home with a webcam and a proctor monitoring you. Check chinesetest.cn for availability.

How often is the HSK exam held?

Typically 6–12 times per year, depending on the test center and country. Major cities may offer monthly sessions. Check the official HSK website for your local schedule.
