HSK vs HSKK (2026): Written vs Speaking -- Do You Need Both?

HSK and HSKK are both official Chinese proficiency tests from Hanban, but they test completely different skills. HSK tests reading, writing, and listening. HSKK tests speaking. Many learners don't realize both exist -- and many don't know which one they actually need.

This guide explains the difference clearly, shows you the level mapping, and helps you decide whether you need one or both tests.

What Is HSK? Quick Recap

The HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi -- Chinese Proficiency Test) is the world's most recognized Chinese proficiency certification. It is administered by Hanban (affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education).

LevelVocabularyDurationSkills Tested
HSK 1150 words40 minutesListening, Reading
HSK 2300 words55 minutesListening, Reading
HSK 3600 words85 minutesListening, Reading, Writing

What HSK does NOT test: Speaking. The HSK has no spoken component at all. That's where HSKK comes in.

What Is HSKK?

HSKK stands for Hanyu Shuiping Kouyu Kaoshi -- Chinese Proficiency Speaking Test. It was launched in 2012 specifically because the HSK only tests reading, listening, and writing, leaving speaking ability unmeasured.

HSKK is:

  • A separate exam from HSK (different registration, different certificate)
  • Administered by Hanban -- same organization as HSK
  • Offered 6 times per year at HSK test centers
  • Also available online in some countries
  • Scored as Pass/Fail (not a percentage)
  • Available at 3 levels: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

The test format involves listening to audio prompts and responding verbally. Your responses are recorded and scored by examiners.

HSKK Levels Explained

HSKK to HSK Level Mapping

HSKK has 3 levels that correspond roughly to HSK levels. Here's the official mapping:

HSKK LevelEquivalent HSK LevelVocabulary Required
HSKK BeginnerHSK 1-2~200 words
HSKK IntermediateHSK 3-4~900 words
HSKK AdvancedHSK 5-6~3,000 words
Important: Your HSKK level does not need to match your HSK level. Many candidates have high HSK written scores but low HSKK performance -- because speaking is a separate skill. If you want to demonstrate both reading/writing AND speaking ability, you need both certificates.

Who Needs HSKK?

You likely need HSKK if:

  • Your Chinese university program requires a speaking certification alongside HSK
  • You're applying for a job that requires demonstrated Chinese speaking ability
  • Your scholarship application requires both written and oral proficiency proof
  • You're applying for a Chinese government scholarship (many require HSKK)
  • You want to prove your full Chinese proficiency -- not just reading/writing

You probably don't need HSKK if:

  • Your university or employer only requires HSK certification
  • You're taking HSK for personal achievement or immigration purposes
  • Your goal is reading Chinese materials or understanding Chinese media
  • No specific HSKK requirement exists in your program or visa application
  • You're still at beginner level -- focus on HSK first
Rule of thumb: Check the exact requirements of your target program, employer, or visa. If the requirement says "HSK" only, you don't need HSKK. If it says "Chinese proficiency including speaking," you likely need HSKK as well.

How to Prepare for HSKK

HSKK requires a different preparation approach from HSK. You're not being tested on written comprehension -- you're being tested on fluent oral production under time pressure.

5 Effective HSKK Preparation Methods

  1. Shadowing practice: Listen to native Chinese speakers and repeat simultaneously. Use HSK listening recordings, Chinese podcasts, or TV shows. Focus on matching tone, rhythm, and speed -- not just vocabulary.
  2. Daily recording review: Record yourself speaking Chinese for 2-3 minutes every day. Listen back and identify pronunciation errors, hesitations, and tonal mistakes. This is the most effective self-improvement method for HSKK Advanced.
  3. AI Tutor conversation practice: BizHan's AI Tutor (bizhan.ai) allows you to practice spoken Chinese conversations. Get corrections on grammar and vocabulary in real time. This bridges the gap between HSK written knowledge and HSKK oral performance.
  4. Topic preparation bank: HSKK Advanced requires a 2-minute speech on a topic. Prepare 20-30 common topics: environment, technology, education, health, culture, economy. Practice speaking on each for 2 minutes without stopping.
  5. Timed practice: HSKK gives you very little time to respond. Practice answering questions within 10-15 seconds (HSKK Intermediate) and giving 2-minute speeches with a timer. Speed and confidence under time pressure is a key skill.

HSKK Preparation Timeline

Weeks Before ExamFocus
8 weeks outDaily shadowing, 20 min. Review HSKK sample questions.
6 weeks outAdd daily recording practice. Review recordings weekly.
4 weeks outPractice full mock HSKK tests under exam conditions. Time each section.
2 weeks outTopic speech bank (Advanced). Focus on weak areas from mock tests.
1 week outLight review only. Rest voice. No intensive drilling.

Which Test Should You Take First -- HSK or HSKK?

Recommended order: HSK first, then HSKK.

Your HSK written score gives you the vocabulary and grammar foundation for HSKK. If you pass HSK 3, you have the vocabulary for HSKK Intermediate. If you pass HSK 5, you have the vocabulary for HSKK Advanced. Build your written foundation first, then add speaking practice.

The exception: if your program has a hard deadline and requires both certificates simultaneously, register for both at the same test sitting. Many test centers allow you to take HSK and HSKK on the same day.

Prepare for HSK now: BizHan has 178 practice tests across all HSK levels. Build your written foundation first at bizhan.ai/test.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between HSK and HSKK?

HSK tests reading, listening, and writing. HSKK tests speaking only. They are separate exams with separate certificates, both administered by Hanban. HSK has 6 levels; HSKK has 3 levels (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced).

Is HSKK harder than HSK?

They test different skills, so difficulty depends on your strengths. Many learners who score well on HSK written tests struggle with HSKK because spoken Chinese requires different practice. Pronunciation, speed, and fluency under pressure are skills that written study alone doesn't build.

Do I need both HSK and HSKK for Chinese university admission?

It depends on the university and program. Many Chinese universities require only HSK (typically HSK 4-6 depending on the program). Some programs -- especially full-immersion Chinese programs and some scholarships -- additionally require HSKK. Always check the specific admission requirements of your target institution.

Which HSKK level should I take?

Choose the HSKK level that matches your HSK level: if you passed HSK 1-2, take HSKK Beginner; HSK 3-4 corresponds to HSKK Intermediate; HSK 5-6 corresponds to HSKK Advanced. Check the specific requirement of your program -- many scholarships require HSKK Intermediate minimum.

Can I take HSK and HSKK on the same day?

Yes. Many test centers allow you to register for and take both exams on the same day. Check with your local Hanban-authorized test center. The exams are short enough (especially HSKK at 17-24 minutes) that same-day testing is practical.
